Parent Education and Engagement for Elementary Classrooms -- ROOM 215

Teaching at a school that was founded in part to foster parent participation, I spent countless hours reflecting on how I utilized parents' time, energy, and interest to maximize their impact on student learning inside and outside of the classroom. I strongly feel that only asking parent volunteers to make copies and check homework folders is a missed opportunity, so I have looked for ways to integrate them in my classroom community and have them support instruction in a more direct way. I host regular parent education opportunities, including how to assess reading and writing, facilitate small-group conversations, and build relationships with students in addition to having an education book club for adults four times a year. I also provide a series of ways parents can contribute, while they are outside of the classroom, including responding to homework and writing students letters throughout the year. Please join me for an extended conversation in which I discuss my system for sharing my classroom and expertise with parents in order to increase their impact and share resources.
